Warning Signs Of Stuttering Behaviors

1. Multiple Repetitions - All of us, particularly children learning to talk, repeat words and phrases. It is not uncommon for a four-year-old to repeat occasionally one word many times, “and-and-and-and…” and then laugh about it.
Does your child repeat parts of words, usually the first syllable often with many words and in many situations?
2. Prolongations - Does your child prolong the first sound of a word, so that “Mommy” becomes “Mmmmmmmmmommy”?
3. Tremors - Do you notice your child’s mouth and jaw tremble or vibrate when he seems to get stuck on words?
4. Rise in Pitch and Loudness - As your child tries to get a word out, does the pitch and loudness of the sound rise before he finishes the word?
5. Struggle and Tension - Does your child struggle to get words out or have an unusual amount of tension in his lips, tongue, throat or chest when he tries to say certain words?
6. Moment of Fear - Does your child react emotionally when experiencing difficulty getting a word out?
7. Avoidance - Does your child’s struggle to speak lead him to try a variety of avoidances? Examples: Postpone trying a word;
Refuse to talk at times;
Substituting or inserting irrelevant words.
 

The presence of these signs indicate that your child may develop a real stuttering problem
unless something is done. If you have not already done so, you should consult
 a licensed speech-language pathologist who is experienced in the field of stuttering.
